O Rio Da Minha Aldeia
Tom Jobim
The River of My Village
The Tagus is prettier than the river that flows by my village,
But the Tagus isn't prettier than the river that flows by my village
Because the Tagus isn't the river that flows by my village.
The Tagus has big ships
And still sails on it,
For those who see in everything what isn't there,
The memory of the galleons.
The Tagus flows down from Spain
And the Tagus enters the sea in Portugal.
Everyone knows that.
But few know what the river of my village is
And where it goes
And where it comes from.
And that's why, because it belongs to fewer people,
The river of my village is freer and greater.
Through the Tagus, you go out into the world.
Beyond the Tagus, there's America
And the fortune of those who find it.
No one ever thought about what lies beyond
The river of my village.
The river of my village doesn't make you think of anything.
Whoever is by it is just by it.
