Sinal da Cruz
Tristão da Silva
Sign of the Cross
In the small chapel
Of the old and white village
I gave Maria da Luz
A cross to wear on her chest
And an oath was made
By both over that cross
I swear to be yours, she said
And I said I swear to be yours
And through the stained glass of the chapel
The blessing from heaven came in
Months went by
And time passed
And every time I saw Maria
Alone and young
I would say to her
Maria da Luz
You are to me
The sign of the cross
The small cross
But one day, there's always a day
That steals our fantasy
Maria entered the chapel
Elusive, step by step
I saw that my symbol of faith
Didn't shine on her chest
I wanted to ask her about the oath
But, with faith already lost
I saw she didn't come confidently
She had another cross in life
Months went by
And time passed
And every time I saw Maria
With bad company
I would say to her
Maria da Luz
You are to me
The sign of the cross
The cross of my days
