La Alemana
Victor Manuel
The German Woman
Some say she's Galician
that she could be Asturian
that she fought tooth and nail
to remain a virgin and a brigadier
she lost it next to the convent,
next to any dawn.
One day she dyed her hair
and began to be 'the German'.
She's a woman who waged war
on her own, in the rear.
Who had a child with the nuns
and others taken by the water.
Who never inspired tenderness
or ever gave a kiss,
Who never had a lover
or ever said 'I love you'.
Looking back in history
they might discover
some peasant parents
who managed to survive;
and a Sunday in the parish
that saw the path ahead
seeing photos of cities
seeing Parisian fashions.
No one in the village found out
about her steps or hers
they never wanted to discover
how she spent her luck.
They only received a letter
notifying the burial
of a daughter who was killed
by the hands of a truck driver.
