Si Yo Fuera Dios
Victor Manuel
If I Were God
If I were god I could be in everything,
Inside a pencil or an eraser,
Inside rivers, forests, and compasses
That find everything in the darkest darkness.
If I were god I could know what hell is
And have the eyes to see inside the fire,
Inside the gas, inside the gold, the poison,
Of the looks stored in the mirrors.
If I were god I would make myself a card
That would serve as my introduction,
Without a phone, without a specific address
That in gothic letters would only say 'me'.
If I were god and cold as ice
I could live ten centimeters above the ground
And know the intimate secrets
Of the criminal and his repentance.
If I were god I could call a timeout
Walk leisurely through all the holes,
Be able to reach where the echo turns around,
Soothe pains that have been hurting for so long.
If I were god I wouldn't perform any more miracles
What greater miracle than someone believing in god.
Of my feats everyone has spoken,
My biography I alone shall write.
If I were god and nothing existed
I would draw a being very similar to you,
Then I would say rise and walk
Inaugurating in this way the morning.
You would pretend to wake up very surprised
You would touch me as if tracing a map,
I would tell you the tale of Eve and the apple,
While glory spills from your forge.
