If one day in an orgy they called me
With longing they asked
Where is Noel
With all my faith I would answer
Wandering at night and day
Living on earth and in heaven
I really enjoyed his sambas
With my head in the clouds
I felt his presence
In the air of Vila Isabel
I didn't drink with the seducer
Nor did I go with him to the brothel
But I know he is present
With us in this laurel

He came to the planet with the auspices of a comet
In that year of the Revolt of the Whip
His life was made of musical notes
His beautiful sambas livened up carnivals
He played in blocks with bohemians and mulattos
He climbed hills without social prejudices

It was a great mourning
When the genius rested
All samba mourned

What a huge sorrow
Our teacher is gone
Lindaura sobbed
And the Lady of the Cabaret didn't dance
He made the passage to outer space
But he is alive in our carnival
