I pagliacci
Vinicio Capossela
Clowns
Once I only laughed
seeing the enchantment of us
dressed in feathers and toys
with accordion mouths
and lipstick in our eyes
Monkeys, obedient old ladies
and wise horses
playing on their backs
laughing was like love
then, repeating the trade
one learns the duty to act
the salon pumps its breath
and laughter is deflated from too much blowing
the clown makeup seems like clay
it sticks to the face
the fool's ailment
I would like to laugh tonight
I would like to laugh for myself
One Two Three!
the elephants stand alert
fleas jump forward
be careful, the tamer passes by!!
The soul that laughs
laughs and will always laugh
like a prayer
the trapezes buzzed electric
feathered birds from a moon world
comrades tied hand in hand
flying like fish
near and far
suddenly the two arms touch
hanging in the air
like rags
they throw sand on the blood
and the clowns enter running
And always laugh to please
keep the room full
how nice to hear
the cheerful applause
fill the room
drive away the evil
and always surrender with a pounding heart
to dreams and words
that make you burst!!
The owner has a long trumpet
and daring mustaches
and deep down he already knows
that we remain equal under the whip
happy and unable to be normal
so let the others laugh at us
so let the others laugh tonight
let the others laugh for us.
