Desespero da Piedade

Pity of Mercy

My lord, have mercy on those who ride the tram
And dream on the long journey of cars, apartments...
But also have mercy on those who drive
When facing the city of sleepwalkers, in the direction.

Have mercy on the small suburban families
And especially on the teenagers who get drunk on Sundays
But have even more mercy on two elegant ones who pass by
And unknowingly invent the doctrine of bread and the guillotine.

Have much mercy on the frail lad, three crosses, poet
Who only has his sideburns and the tiny girlfriend
But have even more mercy on the fearless strong sports colossus
And who goes fighting, rowing, swimming towards death.

Have immense mercy on the musicians of cafes and tearooms
Who are virtuosos of their own sadness and loneliness
But also have mercy on those who seek silence
And suddenly an aria from Tosca descends upon them.

Do not forget in your mercy the poor who have become rich
And for whom suicide is still the sweetest solution
But truly have mercy on the rich who have become poor
And become heroic, giving a sense of greatness to holy poverty.

Have infinite mercy on the bird sellers
Who leave tears and incomprehension in their clear souls
And also have mercy, though lesser, on the counter sellers
Who love the customers and go out at night, who knows where they go...

Have mercy on barbers in general, and hairdressers
Who become effeminate by profession but are humble in their caresses
But have even more mercy on those who cut hair:
What waiting, what anguish, how unworthy, my God!

Have mercy on cobblers and shoe store clerks
Who resemble repentant Mary Magdalenes asking for mercy for the shoes
But also remember those who put on shoes again
Nothing worse than tight shoes, Lord God.

Have mercy on useful men like dentists
Who suffer from usefulness and live to make others suffer
But have more mercy on veterinarians and pharmacy assistants
Who would very much like to be doctors, Lord.

Have mercy on public men and especially politicians
For their easy speech, bright look, and confident hand gestures
But have even more mercy on their servants, close ones, and relatives
Make sure, Lord, that politicians do not come from them too.

And in the long chapter of women, Lord, have mercy on women
Punish my soul, but have mercy on women
Drive my spirit crazy, but have mercy on women
Ulcerate my flesh, but have mercy on women!

Have mercy on the ugly girl who serves in life
With house, food, and clean clothes for the pretty girl
But have even more mercy on the pretty girl
That men harass - men are no good, no good, my God!

Have mercy on the young girls of the side streets
Who have only the Consolation Window as support in life
And dream exalted in humble rooms
Eyes lost and breast in hand.

Have mercy on the woman in her first coitus
Where the first joy of Creation is created
And where the tragedy of angels is consummated
And where death meets life in disintegration.

Have mercy on the woman at the moment of childbirth
Where she is like water exploding in convulsion
Where she is like earth vomiting anger
Where she is like the moon giving birth to disillusionment.

Have mercy on women called divorced
Because mysteriously they regain virginity
But also have mercy on married women
Who sacrifice and simplify themselves for nothing.

Have mercy, Lord, on women called vagabonds
Who are miserable, exploited, and infertile
But who sell cheap many moments of forgetfulness
And in return, men kill with a razor, with fire, with poison.

Have mercy, Lord, on the first girlfriends
With a hermetic body and a pathetic heart
Who go out on the street happy but always come back miserable
Who think they are dressed but actually live naked.

Have mercy, Lord, on all women
Who deserve so much love and friendship
Who desire so much poetry and sincerity
Who need so much joy and serenity.

Have infinite mercy on them, Lord, who are pure
Who are children and are tragic and beautiful
Who walk at the whim of the winds and sin
And have the only emotion of life within them.

Have mercy on them, Lord, one told me
To have mercy on herself and her crazy youth
And another, at the simple emotion of pious love
Raved and dissolved in the joys of fleshly love.

Have mercy on them, Lord, who within them
Life wounds deeper and more fertile
And sex is in them, and the world is in them
And madness resides in this world.

Have mercy, Lord, on the holy women
On the old boys, on the humiliated men - finally be
Merciful to all, who all deserve mercy
And if you have any mercy left, Lord, have mercy on me!
