Poema de Natal
Vinicius de Moraes
Christmas Poem
For this we were made:
To remember and be remembered
To cry and make cry
To bury our dead -
That's why we have long arms for goodbyes
Hands to gather what was given
Fingers to dig the earth.
So will be our life:
An afternoon always forgetting
A star fading in the darkness
A path between two tombs -
That's why we need to watch over
Speak softly, tread lightly, see
The night sleeping in silence.
There's not much to say:
A song about a cradle
A verse, perhaps, of love
A prayer for those who leave -
But may this hour not be forgotten
And for it our hearts
Let themselves, serious and simple.
For this we were made:
For hope in the miracle
For the participation of poetry
To see the face of death -
Suddenly we will wait no more...
Today the night is young; from death, only
We are born, immensely.
